Acute exercise and caffeine improve insulin-induced hypoglycemia in normal and malnourished rats Biological Sciences
Babata, Lucas Kazunori Rubira; Malta, Ananda; Godoi, Vilma Aparecida Ferreira de; Pedrosa, Maria Montserrat Diaz.
In food restriction, hypoglycemic episodes can be more severe and persistent. This study assessed the influence of acute exercise and caffeine on the insulin-induced hypoglycemia in freely-fed or malnourished (50% food restriction) young rats. At the age of 60 days, rats under overnight fasting received an insulin injection to cause an episode of hypoglycemia. In some animals, hypoglycemia was preceded by an acute session of exercise, in others, caffeine was orally given 15 minutes after insulin injection; or exercise and caffeine were combined. Blood samples were collected at regular intervals for five hours after insulin injection. A beneficial effect of both exercise or caffeine on the hypoglycemic episode in the malnourished rats was found. In the...

Atrial natriuretic peptide and feeding activity patterns in rats BJMBR
This review presents historical data about atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) from its discovery as an atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) to its role as an atrial natriuretic hormone (ANH). As a hormone, ANP can interact with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA-A) and is related to feeding activity patterns in the rat. Food restriction proved to be an interesting model to investigate this relationship. The role of ANP must be understood within a context of peripheral and central interactions involving different peptides and pathways

Blood glucose regulation during fasting in rats under food restriction since birth BABT
Vitoriano,Adriana de Souza; Malta,Ananda; Barrena,Helenton Christian; Furlan,Maria Montserrat Diaz Pedrosa; Bazotte,Roberto Barbosa; Gazola,Vilma Godoi.
The effect of severe food restriction since birth on regulation of fasting glycemia in male Wistar rats was investigated. The control group (CG) had free supply of chow, while the restriction group (RG) received 50% of the amount ingested by the CG. The experiments were done in adult (60 days) overnight fasted rats in which glycemia, liver free glucose levels and hepatic glycogen concentration were measured. In part of the experiments in situ liver perfusion was done. The results showed that livers from the RG had higher glycogenolysis rates but lower gluconeogenesis rates from L-alanine (10 mM). Since RG showed maintained glycemia during fasting, it could be concluded that livers from RG produced glucose preferentially from glycogenolysis in detriment of...

Down-regulation of the cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum ryanodine channel in severely food-restricted rats BJMBR
Vizotto,V.A.; Carvalho,R.F.; Sugizaki,M.M.; Lima,A.P.; Aragon,F.F.; Padovani,C.R.; Castro,A.V.B.; Dal Pai-Silva,M.; Nogueira,C.R.; Cicogna,A.C..
We have shown that myocardial dysfunction induced by food restriction is related to calcium handling. Although cardiac function is depressed in food-restricted animals, there is limited information about the molecular mechanisms that lead to this abnormality. The present study evaluated the effects of food restriction on calcium cycling, focusing on sarcoplasmic Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA2), phospholamban (PLB), and ryanodine channel (RYR2) mRNA expressions in rat myocardium. Male Wistar-Kyoto rats, 60 days old, were submitted to ad libitum feeding (control rats) or 50% diet restriction for 90 days. The levels of left ventricle SERCA2, PLB, and RYR2 were measured using semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Body and ventricular weights were reduced in 50% food-restricted...

Feeding strategies and energy to protein ratio on tambaqui performance and physiology PAB
Santos,Marcio Quara de Carvalho; Lima,Mariana do Amaral Camara; Santos,Luciana dos; Pereira-Filho,Manoel; Ono,Eduardo Akifumi; Affonso,Elizabeth Gusmão.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of feed deprivation and refeeding with diets containing different energy to protein ratios (E/P) on the performance and physiology of juvenile tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum). A 4x2 factorial arrangement with three replicates was used, with four E/P ratios (11.5, 10.5, 9.5, and 8.5 kcal g-1 digestible energy per protein) and two feeding regimens (with and without deprivation), during 60 days. Fish from the food-deprived group were fasted for 14 days and refed from the fifteenth to the sixtieth day, whereas the remaining fish were fed for 60 days. At the end of the experimental period, weight of fish subjected to food deprivation was lower than that of those continuously fed; however, this condition did...

Food restriction beginning at lactation interferes with the cellular dynamics of the mucosa and colonic myenteric innervation in adult rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
SCHOFFEN,JOÃO PAULO F.; VICENTINI,FERNANDO A.; MARCELINO,CAROLINA G.; ARAÚJO,EDUARDO J.A.; PEDROSA,MARIA M.D.; NATALI,MARIA R.M..
The effects of food restriction (FR) on the morphoquantitative aspects of the wall and myenteric neurons of the proximal colon in adult rats were analysed. FR was imposed by duplication of the experimental brood size in relation to the control brood during lactation. The FR group received a 50% reduction of food from weaning until 90 days of age. Samples of the colon underwent histological processing to morphometrically analyze the crypts, muscularis mucosae, tunica mucosa, and muscularis externa. We determined the number of goblet cells and serotoninergic enteroendocrine cells, and morphoquantitatively studied the myenteric neuronal population. FR caused hypertrophy in the tunica mucosa, increase in crypt depth and in the muscular layer of the mucosa, a...

Post-hatch fasting and infectious bronchitis vaccination affect growth, gastrointestinal development, and morphometric parameters of the small intestine of broiler breeders up to three weeks of age R. Bras. Zootec.
Fernandez-Alarcon,Miguel Frederico; Souza,Fernando Augusto de; Campos,Daniel Mendes Borges; Hada,Fabricio Hirota; Nogueira,Wedson Carlos Lima; Macari,Marcos; Furlan,Luiz Roberto; Furlan,Renato Luis.
ABSTRACT The influence of fasting and vaccination against infectious bronchitis (IB) on growth, gastrointestinal development, and morphometric parameters of the small intestine of newborn broiler breeders was investigated. Weight gain (WG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), gastrointestinal visceral growth, residual yolk sac, and morphometric parameters of the small intestine were measured in chicks aged up to 21 d. We showed that WG was lowest in chicks exposed to longer fasting periods (72 h), although compensatory gains with increasing age were also observed. Unvaccinated chicks performed better at seven days; however, at 21 d of age, a compensatory response led to better FCR in vaccinated birds. Allometric growth of the gastrointestinal tract was affected...

Secretory Patterns of Leptin and Luteinizing Hormone in Food-Restricted Young Female Sheep Biol. Res.
RECABARREN,SERGIO E; LOBOS,ALEJANDRO; TORRES,VERÓNICA; OYARZO,ROBERTO; SIR-PETERMANN,TERESA.
Leptin, the product of the ob gene, has been proposed as a metabolic signal that regulates the secretion of GnRH/LH. This may be critical during prepubertal development to synchronize information about energy stores and the secretion of GnRH/LH. This study aimed to assess the effect of food restriction on the episodic secretion of leptin and LH in young female sheep. Five 20-week-old prepubertal females were fed a low-level diet for 10 weeks to maintain the body weight. Control females of the same age received food ad libitum. Blood samples were collected at 10-min intervals for six hours at 20, 26, and 30 weeks of age, and plasma leptin, LH, insulin and cortisol concentrations were measured. In the control group, no changes were found in pulsatile LH...

Use of nicarbazin, salinomycin and zinc oxide as alternative molting methods for commercial laying hens Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Domingues,C H de F; Sgavioli,S; Praes,M F F M; Castiblanco,D M C; Marchizeli,P C A; Pereira,A A; Duarte,K F; Junqueira,O M.
An experiment was carried out to evaluate the performance, egg quality and morphometry of the reproductive tract, liver, pancreas and tongue of laying hens submitted to different molting methods. Two hundred and eighty eight 72-week-old Isa brown layers were distributed according to a completely randomized design with six treatments (molting methods) and six replicates of eight birds each. Layers were fed diets containing 3000 ppm zinc oxide, 60 ppm or 120 ppm nicarbazin, 30 ppm or 60 ppm salinomycin, or were submitted to feed fasting. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and means were compared by the test of Tukey at 5% probability level. Molting methods alternative to feed fasting were effective to induce molting in layer and provided good...
